Why do we put out fire with water?

Water, sand, foam, and anything else that puts out a fire cuts off the oxygen to it.
The substance thus cover the burning area and stop the chemical process. Besides, water has a high heat capacity and heat of evaporation. It cools the burning material and slows down the release of combustible gases.
