Why are cats afraid of water?

Pets are descendants of the wild Nubian cat, which inhibits Northeast Africa, where there are no large bodies of water.

Water is an unfamiliar and potentially dangerous environment for domestic cats; they cannot swim and instinctively avoid getting into water.
